Time travel movie takes you back nearly 100 years using deep learning AI to roaring 20s Biarritz France.
The original silent footage was kindly provided by the Moving Image Research Collection in the University of South Carolina. Full details below.
Film – Années folles ( Roaring 20’s) in Biarritz 1928
Filmed in and around the old Grand Hotel Bar Basque and the cafes and beaches ( Grande Plage) of Biarritz in July 1926 and September 1928.
The original silent footage supplied by MIRC was AI enhanced by Glamourdaze. Firstly colorized, frame by frame, using AI deep exemplar-based colorization techniques. Then cleaned and upscaled to 4k 60fps. Finally a soundtrack was added.
The film begins with two swimsuit models posing outside Bar Basque, Grand Hotel Biarritz. They are the quintessential flappers.
Bar Basque was part of the original Grand Hotel ( now the refurbished Hôtel du Palais.) A very popular social spot in the roaring 20s. Conveniently located right beside the beach. Sadly there is little to be found on the web about this now long departed bar.
Roaring 20s Biarritz – AI Restored Film Scenes from 1926 to 1928
The film includes several scenic views of La Grande plage and Miramar beach “Plage du Miramar.
Many things have changed in the last 100 years, but those little striped tents are still to be seen.
There are several intimate shots of sun bathers and swimmers on the beaches.
We get a a glimpse of a cafe bar called La Potiniere with shots of tourists relaxing outside.
Then a scenic view of a main street in Biarritz in 1926.
Here’s a lovely shot of two women on the promenade. Why folks had their seats facing away from the sea and the sun, is anybody’s guess!
The final shots are above the Le Casino Municipal. In the roaring twenties, that’s where you gambled away your fortune!
Finally, at sunset, we bid farewell to our short 1920s vacation in Biarritz.
