The trailblazing Anna May Wong, is to be commemorated by the US Mint. They will issue the first coins featuring an Asian American.
Watch Anna May Wong – Brought to Life in 2022
An Asian American actress, Anna grew up in Chinatown Los Angelus. Her parents instilled in the young Anna, a love of the performing arts.
She was spellbound by the emerging film industry and secured her first job at the age of 14, as an extra in The Red Lantern( 1919)
While still only 18, she was cast in the lead role of The Toll of the Sea (1922)
In an industry which regularly used white actors, often in Asian roles depicting negative stereotypes, the fact Wong got to star in a film at all is all the more extraordinary.
Like so many Asian Americans, Wong was marginalized by the racist Hollywood industry, and rarely made notable films after. One good film is co-starring with Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express (1932).
Of her time in movies, she famously said “Every time your picture is taken, you lose a part of your soul”
