October fashions from Hollywood in 1938 –
Edith Head designed this bottle-green and beige herringbone tweed suit for Joan Bennett to wear. The green note of the tweed is repeated in the velvet trim of the long topcoat, the cashmere sweater and suede accessories. the stitched velvet acorn cap is also of tweed.
To the right, Loretta Young attends a swanky mid-season fashion show, wearing a beige tweed cape ensemble trimmed with nutria. The belt, shoes and bag ( tucked beneath Loretta’s arm under her cape) are of brown alligator leather.
Ann Sheridan, to the left, also wears a costume that is a smart example of the current vogue for high-lighting dark colors with vital shades. Her trimly tailored black wool frock ( note the all around pleated skirt) has a hip length jacket of claret red trimmed with Persian lamb. Ann’s cuff brimmed turban is of black felt.
To the right, Joan Bennett chooses this coat of Laskin Mouton ( a processed lambskin) for spectator sports and general utility wear. Edith Head designed the natural Kasha frock that Joan wears beneath the coat. Joan’s casual beret, pouch bag and gloves are of rust suède.
From luncheon to the ski slopes. To the left Andrea Leeds attending Hollywood’s famous Brown derby. Her modish costume, created by Vera West, is of black woollen with luxurious trim of silver fox. the dress, pencil slim, features classic neck and sleeve draping. A perky bow gives the felt hat a piquant air !
To the right, Winter sports in Sun Valley,Idaho, claim the ardent enthusiasm of Jean Parker who anticipates thrilling ski runs in this lovely costume of heavy navy woollen, gayly embroidered in red, green, yellow and blue – the same colors featured in her mittens.
To the left, Virginia Bruce‘s unique woollen skating costume, masquerades as n ultra-smart travelling suit. The puritan yoke, collar and hemline band of mustard strikingly contrast its rich brown coloring – the quilted antelope hat is of the same golden hue. Note the smart crocheted yarn gloves and the capacious knapsack bag over her shoulder.
Vital shades of mulberry,green and coral dramatize this chic brown sport suit worn on the left by Phyllis Brooks. Mulberry and green alternatly stripe the jacket – coral colors the suede band on the brown felt hat and the cashmere sweater.
