1970’s in fashion for women. What did women wear in the 70’s? Trends, dresses, miniskirts, maxi’s, hot pants, kaftans, jumpsuits, hairstyles and makeup.
The youth revolution spilled unabated in to the 1970’s. Mini skirts got as high as they could by 1973, when the short lived fad of hot pants took young women by storm.
In a decade once claimed that fashion forgot, the 1970’s now leaves a rather warm glow in it’s wake. Glam rock, disco, punk, ska and reggae all influenced women’s styles in the 1970’s.
The androgynous fashions of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust cemented the unisex look. Finally it was hip to come out as transgender, as fashions increasingly encouraged gender fluid styles.
Notable fashion fads were the hippie and Kaftan dress. Hot pants in 1973. Platform shoes, mini skirts, and big sunglasses! The jumpsuit along with Diane Furstenberg’s jersey wrap dress, could double both as work wear or evening dress.
Makeup leaders for young women included Biba and Yardley, and lip gloss replaced lipstick for a time. Eyebrows were pencil thin. Eye shadows moist and glistening and hairstyles were long and wavy.
